Designed by a midwife and woodworker married couple duo 30+ years ago, the “Iota Birthing Stool" has seen thousands of births across Canada. With blessings from the previous woodworker, we've been handed the torch to carry it forward. We've taken the original template of the Iota stool and integrated some modifications to make it our own.
Historically, perineum steam seats and birthing stools were one and the same across Europe for hundreds of years. We've adopted this model for this particular stool and offer it as a steam seat for those looking to steam, a birthing stool for those using one at home or working with clients, or both for those users that are looking for long-term support pre-conception, during the birthing experience, and throughout the menstruating and menopausal years.
Our softwood maple seats carry an ancestral energy to them hence the naming of these seats as Ancestral Maple. We craft each stool to an heirloom quality and finish with the beauty of Odie’s Oil to nurture naturally and bring out the radiance of these heartfelt species for generations to come.
Stools are built to order and can be made with legs that are attached, or ones that are removable. Finger grooves are on the underside to support gripping during the second stage of labour, and for easy handling.
NOTE
The colour and patterns in maple vary. As we tend towards soft maple for its darker and more varied colour range (pale yellow to creamy beige to darker browns, reds, and even greys) it typically carries pronounced grain patterns too. Expect to see variations in colours and patterns.
DIMENSIONS
19.5” in width, 13.5” in depth (front to back), and can be made with legs that will result in 2 sizes: 10” or 12” from floor to top of the seat. If considering both leg sizes, we require the seat to fit the legs. The best time to order both leg sizes is at the time of purchase.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Wood moves, and wood requires gentle care long term to enjoy for generations. We guarantee the quality of our work for your lifetime use. Normal wear is expected. Dry after each steam use prior to putting away. If used during birth, wipe/wash as you would any other stool. Dry with a towel and ensure it air dries prior to putting away. Long term care will require an occasional re-oil application - you’ll see this when the lustre wanes. Each re-oil will strengthen the bond and increase between applications (several years). Full care instructions are included.
HANDCRAFTED WITH INTENTION
We hand-make all aspects of our seats: from the wood that’s cut by people we know directly; to the natural air-drying process; to the milling process, careful wood selection and pattern matching; to the hand-turning of the legs on our lathe; to the hand sanding and applied oils and waxes. We do it all and take heartfelt pride in the quality we offer.
