Reclaiming Birth - Canadian conferences and global movement

In support of the Canadian Reclaiming Birth conferences - currently held annually in London and Montreal - and of the global movement taking place towards reclaiming sovereignty in birthing, we are thrilled to be able to offer this stool with the Reclaiming Birth logo.

As all of our birth stools are, this too hails from the original “Iota Birthing Stool” designed by a midwife and woodworker married couple duo 30+ years ago. This design style has seen thousands of births across Canada, parts of the US and Europe. With blessings from the previous woodworker, we've been handed the torch to carry it forward. We've taken the original template of the Iota stool and integrated some modifications to make it our own.

Similar in design simplicity used for the Birth Supplies Canada Iota version, we’ve opted for the same seat combined with our extensive finishing approaches that include our naturally toxin-free Odie’s oil and wax finishing blends.

We offer this stool in hardwood maple or cherry, and with removable legs available in 10” and 12” leg heights. Finger grooves are on the underside to support gripping during the second stage of labour, and for easy handling. Legs are stamped with corresponding numbers on the seat to identify their location, and have been chiselled with a chamfer on the bottoms as our personal touch of elegance.

Historically, perineum steam seats and birthing stools were one and the same across Europe for hundreds of years. We've adopted this model for this particular stool and offer it as a birthing stool for those using one at home or working with clients, or for those looking for long-term support pre-conception, during the birthing experience, and throughout the menstruating and menopausal years. Truly an heirloom piece that can be passed on to the next generation.

NOTE

The colour and patterns in maple and cherry vary. Expect to see variations in colours and patterns.

DIMENSIONS

19.5” in width, 13.5” in depth (front to back), and can be made with legs that will result in 2 sizes: 10” or 12” from floor to top of the seat. If considering both leg sizes, we require the seat to fit the legs. The best time to order both leg sizes is at the time of purchase.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Wood moves, and wood requires gentle care long term to enjoy for generations. We guarantee the quality of our work for your lifetime use. Normal wear is expected. Dry after each steam use prior to putting away. If used during birth, wipe/wash as you would any other stool. Dry with a towel and ensure it air dries prior to putting away. Long term care will require an occasional re-oil application - you’ll see this when the lustre wanes. Each re-oil will strengthen the bond and increase between applications (several years). Full care instructions are included.

**Note: if you choose to use chemical cleaning agents, we cannot guarantee lifetime warranty. Chemicals erode wood over time. In these instances, we can offer a 5-10 year limited warranty based on care and upkeep.

HANDCRAFTED WITH INTENTION

We hand-craft all aspects of our seats using traditional methods where possible, and work with others who do the same: from the trees that are cut by people we know directly; to the natural milling and air-drying process free of chemicals and dyes; to our careful wood selection and pattern matching; to the hand-turning of the legs on our lathe; to the hand sanding and applied oils and waxes. We do it all and take heartfelt pride in the quality we offer.
