Supporting nourishing womb care is our jam.
Our story
W O M B W I S D O M. Attune began as a desire to work more directly with nature to support holistic health for those desiring to take their pelvic health into their own hands. It began as a means to support the weaving of sacred ways of relating to the body, to the womb, to our encounters with one another.
For 25 years owner, Destini, has been facilitating holistic pathways to health and healing: from mindfulness classes, to embodiment workshops, to sacred feminine retreats, to graphic work and web support for those in the healing arts, to small-scale community festivals and online platforms designed to highlight holistic approaches so they could become more widely known, accessible, and integrated into the every day.
In her 40’s she discovered the ancestral practice of perineal steaming for the first time, experiencing deep life transformations that spread into every area of her life. Decades of intense physical pain, emotional overwhelm, mental distress and spiritual unrest were eased as stagnation was released and her relationship to her womb became enlivened.
She began to experience the sacredness of the womb, and in so doing, began hearing the call of the ancestors in untold ways. This provided a level of devotion to want to share such a simple, home-care practice with others through crafting steam seats, and to do so with reverence while honouring her commitment to eco-conscious practices.
“When we honour the sacred vessel of creation within us, we understand our capacity as creators, and the multitude of ways we can contribute to a joy-filled, harmonious world from within.”
R E B I R T H. Destini returned to school to learn the fine craft of cabinetry and furniture making in order to be able to hand-craft seats for others. She wanted to provide an avenue for creating greater awareness and accessibility for those seeking an ease from suffering, and a depth of connection with their bodies and wombs.
During her studies, she discovered the relationship between traditional practices around steaming and upright births - both practices that were inherent to women’s womb care prior to the advent of the lithotomy position used in birth during the 17-18th century. Birthing practices today are far removed from the unassisted, physiological process that the body is naturally designed for. Instead, medicalized births have become the norm and as a result, deep levels of trauma are commonplace for both mother and baby, affecting the family and often lasting a lifetime.
“Attune’s focus has been to support the growing awareness of womb health as inherent to the health of a family, of our communities.”
R E C L A I M I N G S O V E R E I G N T Y. In order to support the natural birthing instincts, our birth stools support an upright, deep squat that allows for maximum hip expansion during labour, reducing pain and easing movement. Placenta cord burning bowls provide an opportunity to ensure a departure away from medicalized cord cutting, allow for the baby to receive the benefits of prolonged cord connection, and provide an avenue for creating ceremony around the union of baby and family, earth-side.
I N T E G R A T I N G T H E S A C R E D. Destini continues her studies via an apprenticeship with a master Cabinetmaker of 42 years in order to strengthen her skills with hand-crafting a variety of supports for womb health. She’s also immersed in traditional birth companion studies to unlearn medicalized birth, and integrate the wisdom of the ancestors, the ones supporting a shift towards sovereignty in health, healing, wellness and life.
A mountain forest sanctuary
Our renovated studio is nestled in the countryside, surrounded by hundreds of acres of lush forested land. Here, the energy is palpable, magnified by the tone of the quartz beneath our feet.
Destini holds a BA in Fine Arts from Bishop’s University, and a college diploma in Cabinetmaking + Furniture Tech from Algonquin College. Both focuses lend themselves well to creative design styles in furniture making. She works closely with master craftspeople both on and off-site, and collaboratively with local family-run wood mills to be able to bring together a variety of steam seats and birthing chair options for our amazingly diverse community.
Seedlings of harmony
Attune Studio provides an empowered space where we believe everything is possible. We craft with conscious awareness of our relationship with the Earth - from the materials we use to the finishes we apply to our products and the ways in which we create partnerships in our communities. We understand that the health of the whole is reliant on the health of the parts, and work towards integrating this holistic model in all areas of our projects.
As part of our efforts to increase awareness of the forests, our ancestral connection, our collective health, and ways we can work together integrating long-term sustainable practices, Attune is committed to working with groups and organizations to support forest replantation, ensuring diverse native species are planted with the purchase of each seat. These living beings provide the necessary conditions for our health, healing and wholeness. To honour them is to honour our own divinity.
